SchwuZ, Rollbergstraße 26, closed on 1 November 2025 after a farewell weekend and its final public party.
What happened
Founded in 1977, SchwuZ grew into one of Berlin’s largest queer cultural institutions. The club moved into the Rollbergstraße venue in November 2013 to expand capacity and programming. Financial trouble mounted in 2025. Management filed for insolvency in August 2025. In May 2025 the club dismissed about 33 staff as a cost‑cutting measure. A crowdfunding drive aimed at €150,000 reached a little more than €50,000 by late October. On 23 October 2025 SchwuZ announced that no investor had been found to take over the operation. The final public party ran into the early hours of 1 November 2025.
Who stood behind it
Generations of DJs, drag performers, promoters and volunteers built the place. The club hosted regular nights, special events and community gatherings. It was a workplace for long‑time employees and a home for many regulars.
Why it matters
SchwuZ was more than a dancefloor. It was a large, visible queer venue in Neukölln that offered room for big shows and grassroots nights alike. The move to Rollbergstraße in November 2013 gave the scene a space with increased capacity and scope. The May 2025 layoffs and the crowdfunding shortfall show how fragile even long‑running institutions have become under rising costs and shrinking margins.
